OUR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS are a crucial part of our daily operations. Within our department, volunteers are required to attend 80% of quarterly training opportunities, work four 12-hour shifts per month, and provide back up staffing during general alarms. We also require that our volunteers obtain their IFSAC Firefighter 1 certification (at a minimum) as well as their Washington State EMT-B certification. Riverside Fire & Rescue offers recruitment opportunities for those volunteers who wish to serve their community as a trained First Responder. We recruit new volunteers 2-3 times per year (depending on availability).

Riverside’s volunteer program is an excellent training and service opportunity for those interested in a career in the Fire Service.

Minimum Volunteer Firefighter Requirements:

  • 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • High School Diploma (with your application)
  • Washington State DOL Driver’s License (with your application)
  • Washington State DOL Driver’s Abstract with no disqualifying activities (with your application)
  • Ability to complete a medical exam (upon hire)
  • Ability to complete physical activity exam (with your application)
  • Ability to complete a criminal background check with no disqualifying activities (Upon Hire)

Riverside provides International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications which are recognized as the industry standard throughout the Country.

Testing Process:

Step1: Submit Completed Application with the following SIX documents:

Step 2: Attend and Observe (4) Consecutive weeks of Department Drills

  • Every Tuesday 1830-2130 & Friday 1000-1300 (Choose One)
  • Located at Station 74
    • 4114 56th Ave E, Puyallup WA 98371

Step 3: Complete applications will be reviewed and selected applicants will be called in for the following:

  • Written Exam
    • 100 general knowledge questions in the area of reading, math and mechanical aptitude with a few basic fire and ems related questions.
  • Oral Board
    • A formal interview with individual applicants sitting on a board made up of three different ranking members from Firefighter to Battalion Chief.
  • Chiefs Interview – Must pass written test and oral board.
    • Upon successful completion of written test and oral board, applicant will sit down with a Chief for a less formal interview.

Applicants who complete and pass all of the above will be given a conditional offer pending a criminal background check and medical evaluation. Riverside will cover these costs.
